blog my books apps 100 climbs club artworks video shop contact me more © 2017 simon warren www.100climbs.co.uk. proudly created with wix.com an unbelievable day at the amazing maratona. july 2, 2018 | simon warren i almost feel guilty writing this, why me, how come i got this lucky. today was the amazing maratona dles dolomites. i’d never ridden it before, had always been drawn to the marmotte, mainly because it’s so much easier to get to, but when sports tours international offered me the opportunity to work with them at this year’s event i jumped at it. i’d been to the dolomites once before, ridden a few of the climbs, but on this trip, together with my mate paul i spent a week here ticking off everything from monte grappa, the marmolada to the insane zoncolan, (researching my next book). once all the research was done, and with 10,000 metres climbing in my legs it was time for the maratona. like i said i’d ridden the marmotte many times and though that was a big event, until i came here. the maratona feels like a stage of a grand tour, roads lined with advertisements, banks of motorbike outriders, helicopters circling in the air and the guys up front, they take this very seriously indeed. th... the fred. may 18, 2018 | simon warren the fred whitton, the one and only fred whitton, the toughest baddest sportive in the land. some are longer, some gain more altitude but only the fred has the climbs of kirkstone, honister, newlands, whinlatter, cold fell, hardknott, wrynose and now blea tarn, and for this reason alone it is without parallel. my ‘relationship’, and yes for all the pain it has caused i do love it, began back in 2009. i entered because i knew a lot of the climbs i needed to include in my first book were on the route, in fact six of them, so what better way to experience them than one after the other, and yes, what an experience it was. all started well but once on hardknott pass, after i’d cramped trying to force a 39x26 up the 30% bit, snow began to fall. i can tell you honestly that i have never been more afraid on two wheels before or since than i was that day descending first hardknott and then wrynose on a road that was fast turning white. dropping down through 25% hairpins in the dry is a test enoug... summer is coming, time to head to the mountains. may 15, 2018 | simon warren my love affair with riding in the mountains goes back to the summer of 1992. in-between my first and second year at university, along with a couple of club mates i booked on a trip to chase round after that year’s tour de france. i either paid very little notice to the itinerary or have little recollection of it but what i do remember is that the first couple of days were fraught with problems. our bus broke down numerous times meaning we never got to where we were meant to be and did no riding what so ever. we saw brief glimpses of the race but it wasn’t until the third day, when our much maligned coach pulled up in saint-michel-de-maurienne, at the base of the col de télégraph that we were set free. i’d ridden plenty of hills, and on holiday in italy some reasonably long climbs but nothing that could be classed as a mountain, so this was to be a journey into the unknown. there was a mix of eager excitement and also nervous trepidation as we built our bikes up, i knew ii was pretty swi... a day on the roads of belgium. it gets no better. march 27, 2018 | simon warren no year in the saddle is complete without a trip to belgium to chase around after a big race. after last year’s successful mission to see e3 harelbeke, i had to return and this year i took my mate chris with me to immerse him in the best the country has to offer. he’d been to belgium a couple of times but never to follow a race so he was in for a treat as the plan was to catch the action at least five times and also take in a few more of the famous hellingen on our way round. we had a bite to eat in the tour of flanders museum café then set off to our first berg, the wolvenberg. far from the longest or steepest, and coming after just 45 minutes of racing it wouldn’t shape the race but it gave us our initial view of the riders, many of them showboating up the 15% climb by taking jackets off whilst riding it (easy? you try it). once they passed through, and from then on the day was total mania. our itinerary was tight and packed, i was keen to give chris the ‘platinum package’ and squeez... here come the hellingen february 19, 2018 | simon warren at last, from the darkness of winter comes the bright light of a new racing season. yes, there have been skirmishes in deserts, in southern europe. and a few clashes down under but this saturday marks the start of the season proper with the 73rd running of omloop het nieuwsblad, and our first chance to see the peloton do battle up the infamous hellingen. the small, viciously steep and predominantly cobbled climbs that punctuate the flanders landscape are as famous as the riders who do battle on them and known to cyclists the whole world over. they are the building blocks, the beating heart of these mighty races and like the mountains of the grand tours they are also there for us all to ride 365 days of the year. inspired by seeing our heroes fight it out over their jagged stones we have always been compelled to follow in their tyre tracks, to experience the drama of these notorious roads for ourselves. from the savage slopes of the paterberg via the sheer chaos of the molenberg to the... the old school fixed january 26, 2018 | simon warren the weather in the uk has been pretty dire as of late, freezing rain, ice, snow, you know, basic crappy winter stuff, so to break up the monotony of cranking out miles on the roads, or having to avoid them because they’re just too dangerous i like to take to the trails. now, that isn’t too unusual is it? thing is i don’t own a mountain bike, i don’t have a cross bike, an adventure bike or even a gravel bike, so what do i ride? i take my ‘hack’ bike’. my steal frame, odd wheels, 69 inch fixed gear, single front brake, no nonsense ‘hack’ bike. back in the late 80’s at my first cycling club, newark castle cc, it became apparent that if i was going to join in with the pre xmas club rides, then owning such a machine was a necessity. in the period between the end of the hill climb season and the start of proper winter training the idea was to just have fun, no structure, no pressure, certainly no goals and a big part of this involved riding a fixed gear, everywhere. up to this point i’d neve... man flu? pah. man flu is nothing compared to cyclist’s flu. nothing. december 19, 2017 | simon warren there’s been a bit in the news this week about man flu, some (male) scientist somewhere has claimed to prove it exists, which of course was instantly greeted by all women collectively sighing and placing their heads in their hands. man flu, (or the common cold) as virulent as it is, is nothing though, nothing compared to cyclist’s flu. man flu may stop you going into work, stop you going to the office party, but cyclist’s flu, that stops you riding your bike, that robs you of your very reason to live. you know it’s coming, bit of a sore throat, runny nose, then you start to feel tired and you ache, then it hits. throw the training plan out of the window, throw everything out of the window, cancel christmas, that's ruined, this is going to be bad. day one. you still look and feel like the ‘athlete’ you were the day before so you try to stay positive, maybe it will just blow over, you can have a day off, everything will be fine, it’s not the end of the world. day two. you are still ill... meeting my cycling heroes november 15, 2017 | simon warren a few days ago i had the great pleasure to meet one of my idols, the one and only alberto contador. i say meet, i queued up for a few minutes to have my photo taken with him, receive my complimentary signed hat and share whatever conversation i could shoe horn into this brief encounter. like m
